Simple Pleasures.

It is only when the world slows long enough for one to discover the true simple pleasures of life that a genuine state of contentment occurs. Sleeping in, waking up with a smile gracing your visage, the smell of a good coffee, the song of a nearby bird, the sunshine in your eyes, a scarf to bundle in. This week was full of simple pleasures.

Not much else happened. Life in St Etienne has reached a plateau in excitement levels creating a new normal. To walk down the hill to the main road, to buy a baguette and not expect a plastic bag, to say ‘bonjour’ to every person that you see waiting for the elevator or have a slight recognition and the bus driver, to have endless conversations with your sister/friend.

After a week of such activities, it all climaxed on Sunday afternoon, when after church, Melissa and I took Jessica, packed a picnic, and climbed the biggest hill we could find. We arrived at a place that overlooked the city. It was an amazing view. The sun was shining, the breeze was warm, the company was excellent. When Melissa is present, there is always photo opportunities. The results are silhouette photos (involving jumping) and general appreciation of God’s creation.
